The Volunteer Consultant will provide support to the school’s director and management team. S/he will be accountable to a member of the Teach a Man to Fish team based in Nicaragua who will identify objectives, provide direct supervision and monitor performance throughout the placement. S/he will also be accountable to the president of the board of FEER.

Responsibilities

1. Project Support and Capacity Building with a focus on Business development and administration; of existing and new business including the core activities in tourism/hospitality and agriculture:
Support the implementation of the school’s business and education plan by offering training and help as needed. This includes but is not limited to:

Tourism Activities
• Support the Ecolodge staff in marketing activities including maintaining/improving contact with partners and searching for new ways to raise the profile of the hotel; improving business relationship with tour operators in Nicaragua and elsewhere.
• Support the Ecolodge staff in reviewing/improving the marketing plan that will be easy to follow once the Volunteer Consultant placement has ended;
• Support the Ecoldoge staff in operational planning and implementation of best practices in customer service and quality management;
• Support the Ecolodge staff in regularly reviewing the business performance and in subsequent decision-making.
1. Business Support
• Support the school in their school-business planning and management mainly in the form of setting objectives and following up action (attend weekly staff meeting);
• Produce monthly formal reports (including financial results) for the management team at La Bastilla and for TAMTF;
• Work with the technical team to identify problems and areas for improvement and help them to arrive at solutions.

2. Communication and Learning

Contribute to communication materials and the continued development of the Teach A Man To Fish model by:
• Capturing and communicating lessons learnt from training and capacity building exercises to the Teach A Man To Fish London office;
• Producing blog posts and social media updates;
• Helping with the creation of new information and resources as required.
Person Specification:
The successful candidate will have

• Significant experience as a senior business manager and a desire to share these years of experience with a school running school businesses
• Ability to teach or train in order to be able to pass on this knowledge
• Experience in business plan development, operations, organizational development, or marketing strategy and accounts/budgets
• Experience living/working in a developing country context, and ability to integrate and work well with a local cross-cultural team
• Fluent English and Spanish language skills sufficient to be very comfortable giving presentations, holding meetings & writing documents
• An engaging communicator with an ability to influence and facilitate people changing and adapting the way they do things
• A willingness to live in a rural area with basic living conditions
• Strong IT skills (familiarity with Word and Excel)
Desirable:

• Knowledge of Latin American culture
• A passion for international development, enterprise and education
• Experience working with young people
Duration: 3-6 months, subject to 1 month probation period
Setting: Centro Técnico La Bastilla, Jinotega, Nicaragua
